Aerodynamics in the Trucking Industry Are Paramount

Recently, the Obama Administration decided that over-the-road trucks needed better fuel economy, and thus, increased the MPG ratings for future trucks in the trucking and transportation sector. With new materials coming forth it appears this will be feasible, thus, no need for alarm. However, we also know that these latest materials will take a while to get to market - from the research centers developing new methods of manufacturing such materials to the real world.

Yes, I am speaking of carbon nano-tube construction, graphene coatings, and high-tech composites. This combined with better aerodynamics in the trucking industry are paramount. The combination of the two, along with the new propulsion technologies ought to be just the ticket indeed. Let's address the aerodynamic issues in trucking, specifically with over-the-road trucks for a moment.

There was an interesting piece in Bloomberg Business Week (July 18 July 24, 2011) published in the "Innovator Section" titled; "In the Flow" by John Tozzi which interviewed an expert in modeling airflows, Kambiz Salari who stated; "Streamlining trucks could save the shipping industry $24 billion annually." He'd patented the idea, and referenced some very interesting science on fluid technology from the expert in Germany who coined the niche fluid-dynamic science it used.

Indeed, just a couple of days ago, while I was considering that article above from Bloomberg Business week another gentleman contacted me and stated he had a very streamlined design; "Our bullet truck IP can double class 8 truck fuel economy (doubles it) and increase profit margin 45% to the independent trucker," and his concept was for a uni-body truck innovation "with super single tires; 10+ mpg at 80,000 lb highway weights should be achievable. Current fleet average is 5.4."

Okay so, I too believe that 10 mpg is doable by increasing aerodynamic efficiency in my views. At what speeds was he talking about you ask? Normal highway speeds 65-70 mph, and although they have not completed the prototype design model and have not run it through a wind-tunnel for co-efficient of drag tests, their fluid-dynamics, aerodynamic software graph certainly puts it within that possible range. Further, as new materials come due, we can expect lighter weight vehicles too, perhaps carrying loads of 45,000 to 50,000 lbs or more achieving the near 10 mpg figure.

Perhaps you noted that the Obama Administration had recently called for increased mpg figures in the future for over the road trucks. Some in the trucking industry were fit to be tied, but maybe they shouldn't get too upset just yet, because many of these future technologies are starting to come together and should arrive in the next 5-10 years, and as the aging fleets retire, they should be available. Not to mention the fact that rising oil prices will have trucking companies lined up to get these fuel efficient units.

Now then, with all that said, it just maybe that the free-market will solve all of these problems without government intervention at all. Of course, the government has already mandated higher miles per gallon fuel standards for over the road trucks, but I wouldn't give them credit for it when it does happen. After all, it will be the innovators and free-market capitalists which finally get this done. Please consider all this and think on it.

Road Rage - How A Trucker Avoided An Accident, This CDL Requirement Will Save Your Life

I'm a trucker with more than ten years experiencing and over a million miles logged. It just so happens I ran into a situation where a person tried to get money out of me and almost caused an accident. By my experience of over the road trucking, knowing the CDL requirements I was able to avoid an accident and kept on trucking. So here's my story and a few tips to help you.

What Happened

I just got a call from safety who wants to know how I am going to pay for a broken TV set. I explained that I was in Ohio on a load headed to St. Louis Missouri. While driving south on interstate 75 I was approaching interstate 70 so I could go west bound all the way to St. Louis.

I was in the right lane and I needed to merge one more lane over to the so I can get onto for the exit ramp for I-70 west bound. Checking my mirrors and putting on my signal light I saw that I couldn't get over to my exit ramp because a car was in that lane lane just back behind my trailer. To me that was just to close to cut in. So I slowed down, but as I slowed down they slowed down.

Where I Thought The Motorist Was Helping a Fellow Trucker

With my signal light on to let them know I needed the exit lane the car behind me flashed their high beams at me. This signal is often used to let the person in front of you know it is clear to merge over.

I took the ramp and started going west bound on I-70 and the whole time I was being tailgated. For what purpose I didn't know but I had a funny feeling something was not rite. Then the car shot out from behind my my trailer into the left lane and sped up fast and past me like crazy. Just at that time I knew something was going to happen so I put my foot on the brakes and started slowing down.

Where Learning CDL Requirements and Experience Came In Handy

Just then the woman cut right in front of me just missing my front bumper and hit her brakes. I was already on the brakes slowing down. So when she hit her brakes really hard my chances surviving without a crash increased. She then seeded away as I was left bewildered and confused.

I was lucky she was gone with no accident. But I had a feeling it wasn't over yet. About 20 minutes later I get a call from safety. Safety wanted to know when and how I can buy a new TV set.

The Road Rage

This is the story that safety was told by the motorist. This is unbelievable. The motorist said I caused a huge accident and put over 6 cars into the ditch. Every time a customer comes up and tells you that you've done a wonderful job, tell them thank you, but tell him that you'd rather he get on the CB and brag about his clean truck. In other words you are suggesting that the truck driver spread the good cheer, and refer you some additional business. Believe me they will, and they might drive for another 50 to 100 miles down the freeway telling everyone within earshot what a great job you did.

Next, it makes sense to contact the dispatchers from all the companies that own a large number of trucks. Anytime you see a driver who is satisfied from a large trucking company, ask them for the phone number of their dispatcher. Then put in a call to the dispatcher along with some sort of a discount program if they referred their drivers to come to you with a voucher for payment for their truck wash.

Lastly, it makes sense to make deals with all the truck stops within a 100 to 200 mile radius. Remember most of these truck drivers drive all day and all night, and they are looking for some point to take a break, get a truck wash, a bite to eat, and get back on the road. Driver CPC Periodic Training - What's It All About Then?

By the 10th of September 2014 in the United Kingdom most existing and new professional Large Goods Vehicle (L.G.V) drivers will by law, be required to have completed an extra 35 hours of vocational training. (The Driver CPC EU Directive 2003) This is known as The Vehicle Drivers Certificate of Professional Competence or "Driver CPC". On completion drivers will then be required to renew this training on a 5 yearly cycle.

To comply with the act drivers will have to complete a Driver CPC Course. This will consist of five seven hour training sessions which can only be delivered by an approved instructor and registered training centre. The governing body responsible for Driver CPC Training is The Joint Approvals Unit for Periodic Training (J.A.U.P.T.) who are in turn responsable to The Driving Standards Agency in Great Britain (D.S.A) and The Driver and Vehicle Agency in Northern Ireland.

J.A.U.P.T monitors Training Centres and Trainers to make sure that training is given to the highest standard. Before a trainer can present a course (7 hours of instruction) they must prove their professional ability to train and have a high level of subject knowledge. All courses are vetted and approved by J.A.U.P.T before they get presented to drivers, further to this each course gets rechecked by J.A.U.P.T. annually. Things I've Learned About Production and Processes in Cleaning Fleets of Vehicles

Prior to retirement, I ran a mobile truck washing franchising company, and about a dozen years ago, I went in with 4 of our franchisees in the greater Phoenix AZ area to secure an account with the big water and power company there to negotiate a contract to clean all of their vehicles. It turns out the utility company already had a nationwide fleet washing company cleaning their vehicles. In fact they were doing the vehicles for only $2.80 each. You might think that price is far too low, and so did we at the time, at least my franchisees did, but I was more than happy to undercut my competitor.

One thing you need to understand when cleaning fleets of vehicles is the money is in the time, not the job. And when you have 100 work vans, "all the row" and all the same size, it's really easy to clean 60 to 100 vehicles in an hour with a small crew. We should've taken that account, but we didn't. Later we ended up with a cable company with about half as many vehicles and our crews bid only three dollars per vehicle and made a lot of money because they had the production process, and system down to a science, similar to an assembly-line.

Later, they went back to bid on the contract for the utility company, but by then the utility company had signed a three-year agreement, renewing the old agreement with a competing company. A lesson learned I suppose.

Another thing I have learned about cleaning fleets of vehicles is to always have long hose reels for both the fill up tank, a 300-400 feet long 1-inch industrial hose, and 250 to 350 feet or more of high pressure hose with quick disconnects every 50 to 75 feet. This will allow you to fill up with water while your washing is under full production. If you keep the team moving while you are cleaning, it is amazing how many vehicles you can do per hour.

Indeed, you must think about fleet vehicle washing in terms of production, assembly lines, and systems, and not look at each vehicle as a separate entity to be cleaned. Further you should care more about the time you spend on the job to adequately do quality work, than the price per vehicle that you will be billing. Indeed I hope you will please consider all this and learn some of the lessons that our company learned the hard way. If you do this, I believe in the end you will make more money.

Material Handlers Complete Jobs Easily With a Winch and Jib!

Bucket truck parts are designed to be tough. The manufacturer intended this to allow the truck to perform work efficiently. One of the modified versions of these vehicles is used for material handling. This type of equipment is growing in popularity because of its capability to elevate both the crew and heavy loads. This is made possible through two useful parts designed for such usage which are the winch and the jib.

Lifting Capacity

Most material handlers have a jib with a small winch and boom to achieve more lifting capacity than a regular bucket truck. Operators must have additional knowledge about boom angles since the truck's holding power greatly depends on this factor. The lifting capacity of these handlers ranges from 1,500 to 2,000 pounds for a maximum load.

Usage

Adding a light duty jib crane to the boom tip enables a crew to hoist material up to the actual aerial working place. Winch

Another important bucket truck part that is used for material handlers is the winch. These devices are basically a line that can be attached to another object in order to move from one place to another. For bucket trucks, winches are used to pull or move material towards the truck. This piece of equipment can be operated through combustion, hydraulic or electric engines.

Safety in Operation

The following are some practical ways to be safe during material handling:

Be Sure Vehicle is Stationary- Make sure the vehicle is immovable when performing any lift, unless the bucket truck has been otherwise certified according to ANSI standards or the manufacturer's certification.Be Sure to Set Brakes, Outriggers and Chocks- Bucket trucks should be stable by setting the brakes, outriggers and wheel chocks. Flags or cones can be used to alert surrounding traffic that there is an ongoing operation in the area. Do not compromise load limits; the job should be stopped if a malfunction occurs.Follow Standard Safety Procedures- Bucket crews should not attempt to use any device or other platform to reach the working area while inside the elevated bucket; feet should remain firmly on the bucket floor. Harnesses should be worn for fall protection.Check Overhead Clearance- When working near electrical lines, check the overhead clearance. Bucket crews must wear insulated gloves and other gear that is designed for good insulation.

Always refer to the manufacturer's recommendation for the lifting capabilities of the equipment. Efficiency can only be achieved if the equipment is utilized properly. Steep Discounts Await Pickup Truck Buyers

Saving money on a truck is getting easier to do.

If you are in the market for a new vehicle, especially if that buy involves the purchase of a full sized pickup truck, you stand to save thousands of dollars off of the sticker price. Pickup truck discounting has always been the rule, but customers looking for a buy can expect to save even more this year and next. The reason? Fat inventories which must be pared before the next model year, which means the steep discounts are there for the taking.

Fat Inventories

High gas prices have not hurt the demand for pickup trucks, as GM, Ford and Chrysler report sales are up in 2011 over 2010. What most manufacturers haven't done is to adjust production for the months ahead as a tepid economic recovery means that fewer passenger vehicles are being purchased, a fact that is becoming evident as unemployment continues to rise or stay persistently high.

As of this publication, inventories of the Toyota Tundra, Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado, Nissan Titan, Dodge Ram 1500 and GMC Sierra are high. Through the first six months of 2011, full size truck sales were up, but that's because deep discounting brought customers in. Further discounting is expected, with GM likely to reduce many of its trucks by at least $5,000 or more.

In July 2011, TrueCar.com reported the following discounts among truck models surveyed: $5,350 per sale for the GMC Sierra, $4,880 for the Chevrolet Silverado, $4,450 for Ram 1500, $3,750 for Ford's F-Series and $2,654 for the Toyota Tundra. Information about the Nissan Titan was not available.

Year-End Sales

Customers not in an urgent need for a new truck may want to wait until the end of 2011 to make their purchase, especially if the economy remains weak and inventories elevated. Through summer 2011, GM had the highest inventories with supplies 50 percent above normal levels. Ram and Toyota are up by about 15 percent while Ford's inventory levels are in line with averages. Therefore, if you hope to find an excellent buy, GMC and Chevrolet may have the best deals for you.

With discounting already above $5,000 for some models, what can you expect at year end? Two things are likely: fully loaded trucks with all amenities and costing as much as $50,000 should carry deep discounts, perhaps knocking 20 percent off of the sticker price. But, even base models should carry discounts, particularly those featuring an unpopular color, limited amenities and seating for three.

Just be prepared to bargain as the discounts are there for the taking.
